How To Create Hygge In The Home

You may be wondering what this term “hygge” means, where it comes from, and why people are talking about it. The word comes from Danish roots and I have to say, they might have the meaning of life just a little more figured out than we do over here in the United states, so it makes sense that we are looking to follow suit in their vision of tranquility and comfort through this mindset they call hygge. With the way the world is operating these days through such uncertain and isolating times it makes sense that we find ourselves looking to learn how to live more fully, mindfully, and in the moment. Here are a few simple ways you can bring this lifestyle mentality into your own home.

“hy-gge”

[hue-gah] noun

A calm, comfortable time with people you love.

A complete absence of frustrations, or anything emotionally overwhelming, often enjoyed with good food, drinks, warm blankets or candle light.

-Danish

It starts with the simple things. The perfect way to incite a little extra happiness throughout your day is to bring small simple pleasures into your home that spark your senses that sometimes we forget to listen to. It’s simply a consciousness of how the comfort of your surroundings can make you feel when you slow down and live for the moment.

Take that extra time to draw yourself a bath after a long day, but make it special. Why? Because everyone needs a little self-care in their life to feel good.

Having abundance in the moment doesn’t happen overnight but you can start gathering some indoor plants to bring some life to the space, set yourself up with a collection of different candles, there’s no reason you can’t romance yourself.

Pour yourself a glass of wine, toss in a bath bomb, a couple drops of essential oils, and take a breath. You’ll thank yourself later

The fact that you’re taking the time to unwind and enjoy this decadent moment you’ll find yourself smiling without even knowing.

As i mentioned, the Danes live by this hygee mentality for the intention to not only be present in the moment, but to recognize it and appreciate it as well. Mentioned in The Little Book Of Hygge, A Danish Way To Live Well Meik Wiking mentioned that essentially the term is undefinable as this feeling can be related in so many ways but was created for the main effect to survive the mundane lifestyle that the people of Denmark endure throughout the cold dark days spent inside. To simply light a candle and wrap your hands around a warm cup of coffee in the morning can do wonders for the spirit. The calming comfort that can be achieved when you take the time to add small pleasantries into your routine can help wash away the stress of everyday life and be that mood booster we could all use.

Personally, I think we can all relate to the feeling of monotonous days cooped up inside where not even Netflix can keep us occupied anymore, so if it means taking a moment to add a couple of extra details into my morning routine before I sit down for another at-home workday, I’m here for it.

Some ideas that I’ve incorporated into my daily (quarantine) routine is lighting a candle first thing when I wake up. It gives me that little extra coziness while I still waking up craving the warmth of my bed and reaching for my cup of coffee. Typically I go for soy candles but recently I’ve been into the wood-wick candles that give off that crackling fireplace kind of vibes that are perfect for transitioning into the Fall and Winter months.

Hygge In The Fall

The Fall season is upon us, and with that comes all the cozy comforts of the home that we crave as the weather starts to cool down.

A spiced candle burning, cuddled up on the couch with some fuzzy socks, a cozy knit blanket, reading a good book while the smell of chili cooking on the stove wafts through your home. Sounds ideal to me, although it’s not about these comforting items themselves, but how you use them so If you can imagine yourself in a moment similar to that, feeling peaceful, mindful, and content then you’ve got it.

I love the calming ambiance that a Himalayan Salt Lamp gives off, or a wood wick candle. Another thing I like to use are my essential oils. They are so versatile depending on the time of day or mood. I like lemongrass for an energizing wake up to my morning, or lavender to relax at the end of along day. After your nightly routine, get cozy under the covers with your favorite book. Next thing you know you will be waking up ready to start your day.

One of my favorite ways to bring hygge into a room is using a combination of different candle votives and candlestick holders that create a very warm, inviting space to gather with loved ones or for your own personal space. I am a big fan of a vintage boho aesthetic and the word “bohemian” literally translates to having a more relaxed style and spirit. By using soft textures, warm lighting, and natural elements can set a very romantic and comforting tone that will make you want to stop, take a moment and let that relaxation sink in.

Here are some my top picks that you can find not only smell good and bring a cozy aesthetic to a space, but once you incorporate them into your daily routine and you’ll likely find yourself slowing down and living a more mindful, happy life.
